How Often Should Rockford Homeowners Clean Their Air Ducts?
I get asked this question at least three or four times a week. Someone calls for a quote, we get to talking, and they say: “So honestly — how often does this actually need to be done? Or is it one of those things companies push every year just to make money?”
It’s a fair question. And I’m going to give you a straight answer, because I’d rather you trust us for life than sell you a cleaning you don’t need today.
The Standard Answer: Every 3–5 Years
NADCA — the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, which sets the industry standard for this work — recommends that most homeowners have their air ducts cleaned every 3 to 5 years. That’s the baseline for a normal household: no pets, no smokers, no major health conditions, no recent renovations.
For Rockford homeowners specifically, I’d say 3 to 4 years is more realistic than 5. We run our furnaces hard from October through April — sometimes May. That’s 6 to 7 months of forced-air heating pushing air through those ducts constantly. Then we flip to A/C from June through September. That’s almost year-round HVAC use, which means your ducts are working more than they would be in a milder climate.
When You Should Clean More Often
You Have Pets
Dog and cat dander doesn’t just sit on your furniture — it circulates through your HVAC system and builds up in your ducts. One medium-sized dog can meaningfully shorten the interval between cleanings. Two dogs or a couple of cats? Plan on every 2 to 3 years.
Someone in Your Home Has Allergies or Asthma
Rockford’s allergy seasons are no joke — spring tree pollen, summer grasses, fall ragweed. Your HVAC system is essentially a giant air filter for your home, and when the ducts are loaded with allergens, those seasons feel much worse indoors. If someone in your family struggles with respiratory issues, don’t wait 5 years.
You Just Bought an Older Rockford Home
A lot of Rockford’s housing stock was built in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. When you buy one of those homes, you have no idea what’s been living in those ducts. Previous owners’ pets. Construction debris from past renovations. Decades of normal accumulation. Get them cleaned before you move in or right after — it’s a fresh start for your indoor air quality.
Recent Renovation or Construction
Did you just finish a basement, add a room, or have major work done? Drywall dust, insulation fibers, and sawdust are incredibly fine and get pulled into ductwork easily — especially if the system was running during construction. Clean them as soon as the project is done.
You’ve Noticed Any of These Warning Signs
- Dust accumulating faster than usual on furniture and surfaces
- A musty or stale smell from your vents when the system runs
- Visible debris or dust rings around vent covers
- Uneven airflow from room to room
- Higher-than-normal energy bills from reduced HVAC efficiency
When You Can Probably Wait
Honest answer: if your home is clean, no pets, no smokers, no one with respiratory issues, your vents look clean, and you had a legitimate cleaning done 2 years ago — you can probably wait. Don’t let anyone pressure you into an annual cleaning if you genuinely don’t need one.
What we do recommend annually: change your air filter (every 1–3 months actually, depending on type and household), have your HVAC system serviced, and check your dryer vent for lint buildup. Those maintenance items cost much less and matter a lot.
One Thing Rockford Homeowners Often Overlook: The Dryer Vent
While we’re talking about how often to clean things in your home — your dryer vent should be cleaned every 1 to 2 years, regardless of when you clean your air ducts. Clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of house fires, and they’re extremely common in Rockford homes where the dryer has a long interior run to an exterior wall. If your dryer takes two cycles to dry a load, that’s a warning sign.
